Summary
During the two days candidates will be assessed on their personal paddling skills, group management and decision making. Working within a 1 to 6 ratio they will be assessed running a session in moderate surf conditions.
Pre requisites
- Home Nation Leadership Registration (LR) Form
- Surf Kayak Leader Training (Within 3 Years)
- Valid 16hr first aid certificate
- Aged 16 or over
Content
During the two days, candidates will be assessed following the below syllabus as well as conditions allow, in moderate surf conditions;
Personal Paddling Skills
- Paddle out
- Take off
- Carving bottom turns
- Top turns
- Diagonal runs of varying heights
- Carved exit from the wave
- Rolling
Rescue Skills
- Deep-water rescue
- Towing
- Swimming
- Shepherding
- Carries
Safety, Leadership & Group Skills
- Skilful application of leadership principles (e.g. C.L.A.P.)
- Appropriate leadership strategies, judgement and decision-making
- Safety awareness and risk management
- Exercise appropriate group control and management and show concern for the general welfare of other group members
- Demonstrate the capability to manage a range of incidents
- Provide guidance through top tips and handy hints

- Surf specific rescue equipment
- Tides, weather and bathymetry
- Etiquette
- Planning, group awareness and the safety framework
- Wellbeing, health and first aid

Kit List
At this level it is expected that you know what kit you should have. Please bring your own paddling kit suitable to lead a group of 4 paddlers. If you can not transport a boat to assessment and need to use one of ours, please contact us before your assessment date.
