Summary
This will be mainly a practical assessment, which takes place on sections on moderate water tidal environments. This will include assessment of your personal paddling skills, rescue skills, safety, leadership and group skills and the supporting theory. You will need to demonstrate the skills and judgement to select appropriate environments for paddlers with a range of experience.
Pre requisites
- Home Nation Leadership Registration (LR) Form
- Sea Kayak Leader Training (Within 3 Years)
- Valid 16hr first aid certificate
- Aged 16 or over
Content
During the two days, candidates will be assessed following the below syllabus as well as conditions allow with winds conditions up to force 4 and tidal streams up to 3 knots;
Personal Paddling Skills
- Lifting, carrying, launching and landing
- Efficient and effective sea paddling skills:
- Forward paddling
- Reversing and stopping
- Maintaining direction
- Changing direction
- Moving sideways
- Supporting
- Rolling in rough water (on one side only)
- Practical Navigation on the water and in poor visibility
Rescue Skills
- Have knowledge of, and demonstrate skilful application of, appropriate rescue skills
- Self-rescue
- Be conversant with different methods of towing
Safety, Leadership & Group Skills
- Skilful application of leadership principles
- Appropriate leadership strategies, judgement and decision-making
- Safety awareness and risk management
- Exercise appropriate group control and management and show concern for the general welfare of other group members
- Demonstrate the capability to manage a range of incidents
- Provide guidance through top tips and handy hints

Kit List
At this level it is expected that you know what kit you should have. Please bring your own paddling kit suitable to lead a group of 4 paddlers. If you can not transport a boat to assessment and need to use one of ours, please contact us before your assessment date.
